Environmentally Friendly Trash Bags: Compostable & Biodegradable Options

Choosing the right environmentally friendly trash bags is an important step toward reducing everyday plastic waste. With so many options labeled compostable, biodegradable, or non-plastic, it can be hard to understand what actually makes a garbage bag sustainable – and which ones work best in a real kitchen.

In this guide, I break down the key differences and share practical tips to help you choose trash bags that are both eco-conscious and functional.

What Makes a Trash Bag Environmentally Friendly?

What makes a trash bag environmentally friendly comes down to materials, certifications, and how the bag breaks down after use. The most important factors to look for are:

  • Material source – Environmentally friendly trash bags are made from renewable or plant-based materials rather than fossil-fuel plastics.

  • Zero Plastic Packaging – Pay attention to the packaging. It shouldn’t be single-use plastic or made from other toxic materials. Opt for lightweight carton boxes instead.

  • Compostability – Certified compostable bags fully break down into non-toxic components under composting conditions, instead of turning into microplastics.

  • Biodegradability (without plastic residue) – Truly biodegradable bags decompose naturally and don’t leave plastic fragments behind.

  • Certifications and standards – Look for recognized compostability or sustainability certifications to ensure environmental claims are verified.

  • Functionality and strength – A sustainable trash bag should still be strong, leak-resistant, and suitable for everyday use.

Environmentally Friendly Trash Bags: My Top Picks

I'm a big fan of trash bags with simple handle-tie. They are cheaper, need less materials and work just as well as bags with drawstring handles. You simply knot the handles, and that’s it. I use these bags for all sorts of trash now – organic, general, and even cat 💩 By the way, read more about great biodegradable bags for dog and cat poop.

Here's a selection of compostable garbage bags with handle-ties, packaged sustainably, available in a variety of sizes ranging from 1.6 to 13 gallons (6 to 49 liters):

The fourth option – Holy Scrap! – definitely deserves a round of applause for its creative naming!

Large Environmentally Friendly Compostable Bags

And here are three options for the best compostable trash bags in large sizes (33–64 gallons) that are especially useful as yard waste bags for collecting leaves and debris, as well as for industrial applications:

Non Plastic Garbage Bags With Drawstrings

Of course, environmentally friendly trash bags also come with drawstrings. While it’s not my favorite option – because it requires more material and a more complex production process, which makes it more expensive – I do understand the convenience. When you’re dealing with smelly trash, a bag with drawstrings can really save the day.

Author's Note on Non Plastic Garbage Bags

I opt for compostable non plastic garbage bags and prefer bags with handles (my fav is SUPERBIO 13 gallon bags) or even flat-top options because they are cheaper and easier to produce, and therefore require less energy and fewer resources. When compostable bags first appeared, their quality was quite low, and organic waste leaked from them fairly often.

What I see now is that the quality of these bags has improved significantly, and it’s comfortable to use them for both dry and wet waste.

Btw, a separate category of waste in my household is cat poop, for which I use environmentally friendly dog poop bags – something I also highly recommend.

FAQ: Smart & Sustainable Waste Sorting in Small Spaces

Are there eco-friendly alternatives to traditional trash bags?

Yes, consider using compostable garbage bags with or without handle-ties. They are sustainable and come in various sizes to suit different waste types.

How can I manage odors from organic waste in a small space?

Store organic waste in compostable bags and empty them regularly. Use paper or cardboard drainage layers to absorb excess liquid. Keeping the waste in a sealed container or bag can also help contain odors. Alternatively, consider compost bins that can be kept in the kitchen, on a balcony, terrace, or in the garden.

Which type of bag is the most environmentally friendly?

Certified compostable bags made from plant-based materials are generally the most environmentally friendly option, especially when disposed of in proper composting conditions.

Where to buy compostable bags?

Compostable bags are available online (you can simply click on one of the products listed above), in eco-focused stores, and in many supermarkets. Look for certified compostable labels to ensure they meet environmental standards.

What’s the difference between compostable and biodegradable trash bags?

Compostable bags made of plant-based materials. They break down into non-toxic components under composting conditions within a defined timeframe. Biodegradable bags decompose over time via microorganisms and leave residues and microplastic.

Which is better: compostable or biodegradable bags?

Compostable bags are the better choice because they must meet stricter standards and break down into safe, non-toxic materials while biodegradable bags break into microplastics.

Can I dispose of organic waste in a biodegradable bag directly into the environment?

No! Biodegradable bags require proper disposal conditions. They should not be thrown directly into nature. Overall, disposing of trash in the environment is not the right thing to do. Even organic waste in a compostable bag should be disposed of properly and composted in a designated facility or at home.

Is there an alternative to plastic trash bags?

Yes. Compostable and paper-based waste bags are alternatives to traditional plastic trash bags.

What are the drawbacks of biodegradable bags?

They may require specific conditions to break down properly, can be less durable than conventional plastic bags, and sometimes cost more. However, better and more affordable options are appearing on the market every day. While I had some concerns about quality a few years ago, I’m now satisfied with their price-to-quality ratio.

Are compostable trash bags strong enough for kitchen waste?

Yes, many are strong and leak-resistant, but performance depends on the brand and thickness. Do not keep kitchen waste in a bag for too long – 3-4 days max. Choose the right size and avoid overfilling with very wet, heavy waste.

Do compostable bags break down in landfills?

Not always. Landfills often lack oxygen and the conditions needed for composting, so compostable bags may break down very slowly there.

Are non-plastic garbage bags leak-proof?

Some are, especially thicker compostable bags. However, they can be more prone to leaks than plastic if overloaded or left with wet waste for too long. Take the trash out more often, and you’ll be fine 🙂

How long do compostable trash bags take to decompose?

It depends on the conditions and certification. In proper composting conditions, they’re designed to break down within a 3-6 months; in home or landfill conditions, it can take much longer.
